I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Heck, I was on the conference committee and we talked about whether we should have a screen for the backchannel in some of the rooms, and I thought that would be interesting to experiment with. I'm just asking some questions here. I'm glad to hear you say it's a learning style that works for you. I like to take notes during a talk as well, and it does help me learn and recall content - and I can go back and check my notes (in print - old school). I just have to wonder, when you are figuring out how to say something in 140 char or less, does that take away from your ability to concentrate on the speaker. Can you say with certainly that it's never been a distraction? I then question the value - when you go back and follow the twitter conversation to see 20 or more of "The speaker just said..." I do agree it's helpful to catch up on a presentation missed. Just curious - how do you feel about students tweeting, updating FB, etc. while you are teaching them? Do you see it as a learning style or a distraction? Do you encourage it?stevenbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10971047635163060958noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4111164049744267654.post-58032973372673551742011-04-08T11:01:52.554-05:002011-04-08T11:01:52.554-05:00Thanks, Rachel. Andy-taking on ...Thank you all for the comments.

Andy-taking on and having to drop...that is one of the worst! And something that I have had to work on quite a bit, especially as I progress in the profession. One thing our profession offers is a lot of opportunities and it is hard, especially in the beginning, to be choosey.

Rob-It's added to the wishlist. And to the bibliography!

Nick-Your point about what's possible based on one's personal life situation really hits home for me. As for getting paid for professional development, I have been so fortunate to have an incredibly supportive boss with a generous professional development budget. There are things though, that I choose to do because I want to do them, pay or no pay. As Bobbi pointed out in her comments.

At the same time, I am one of those people that likes to learn because I like to learn. I don't always expect it to pay off, even in librarianship. There are classes that I took or workshops I attend because they interest me, not because they will necessarily apply directly to my work. I guess they apply to my overall thinking about our profession or to my understanding of what's on the horizon or what other people do. And that will pay off eventually.

"Random Thoughts", thank you. I have to say, almost all of my ideas happen when I am not at work. When I am in the shower (my colleagues joke that I need a board to write in my shower for how many times I say, "I had this thought in the shower this morning!"). When I am on walks. None of us need to be "on" 24/7, and in fact, I doubt many are.

I understand and share your desire to be recognized in our profession. Because of the isolation that most of us feel in our day-to-day professional life, reaching and receiving affirmation from leading thinkers (doers) in our community is truly a blessing. Just keep contributing and learning, and keep your life in balance.

Incidentally, I think some of my best ideas and writing has originated as the result of my "time out" activities. (If only I could convert daydreams to text while I'm swimming or doing the dishes!) Of course it is possible to do these things, however they may not always be advisable. Or, what is possible for a single librarian with few external commitments may not be possible (or advisable) for a parent.

If we are investing in our professional future, it makes buckets of sense to volunteer our free time for professional development. Everyone's balance is different, and it's hard to find and maintain. Sometimes you start taking on lots of things (you know about this) and you can get overwhelmed. Then you have to start dropping things to stay in balance. But your post spoke to me when I first read it. I feel that same discomfort, Sarah, and I'm not 100% sure I even know why. I'm totally blown away by what we've been able to accomplish with online tools, how it's brought us together in amazing ways and allowed us to collect knowledge and ideas from the masses. I'd never have been able to get where I am careerwise without the Internet. On the other hand, I do sometimes want to be less connected, or more connected to the world around me rather than the world inside my computer. I wonder what we may have lost by being so connected online, spending so much time looking at a screen and quickly clicking from one thing to the next. I used to read all the time and I've seen that decrease significantly in the years since I got broadband. Ironically, I've started reading a lot more since I got a Kindle, so go figure!

Looking at the books that have come out recently by Nick Carr and Clay Shirky, I think a lot of people are starting to think about not only what the Internet can do for us, but what it is doing TO us and how it is changing the way we socialize, parent, read, learn, etc. It really is changing everything. I'll be curious to see what my son's generation looks like and how they learn, read, play, etc.

I guess we're all going to have to find what works for us in terms of internet technology use, but, as a parent now, I feel like I also need to set an example for my child. I don't want him to see my husband and me chained to our computers. I want him to have our full and undivided attention when we're together. And I think that's what has gotten me thinking much more about these issues too, because it's made me more cognizant of how, once Reed goes to bed, the laptops come out and my husband and I spend much of the rest of weeknight evenings 'interacting' behind laptops.

I don't know what it all means, Sarah, but I feel that discomfort too... if that makes you feel any better. ;-)Meredith Farkashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11613744045285136964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4111164049744267654.post-41907189025184434702010-06-16T05:31:37.304-05:002010-06-16T05:31:37.304-05:00Nice Blogging.
